HEEEEEEELLLLLLLLP!!! I’m drowning in a tsunami of health information (specifically supplements). It seems like every day I scroll past wave after wave of yet another supplement I should rush out and purchase in order to save my life. Usually those sponsored ads hook me like a hungry trout. I voraciously read every word as if my life depended on it. It’s as if the writer is the world’s most trusted expert on the subject. Countless times my bank account has shrunk by the standard $59.95 life-prolonging fee. But when is enough, enough?
I hit my breaking point, one day, when I was planning to reorder my entire current regimen of supplements. I’m ashamed to admit it, but I was up to around 20+ different supplements, costing many hundreds of dollars per month (the true cost was too grotesque for my mind to accurately reveal). Anyhow, I realized I did not have enough money in my account to cover all of the supplements at once. This was what forced me back to sanity. I had to downsize. Some of these supplements were going to get the axe. But which ones?
The correct answer is: All of them! It was a clean break. I began saving pockets full of cash and felt unencumbered by pill bottles no longer filling up my pantry. Life was good. Until it wasn’t. For you see, I had become addicted to the very idea that I could take 20 “vitamins” every day and become the epitome of health. A modern day Jack Lalane! So, I began adding supplements into my daily routine once again. The good news? I made a pact with myself to limit it to 5. Never more than 5. A hard line was drawn in the sand.
I did away with your typical A,B,C D, E vitamins and run-of-the-mill minerals. I figured I could address all of those if I ate a smart and varied diet. I would make an honest effort to eat a rainbow of organic fruits, vegetables, and, of course, meat. In addition, I would get tons of vitamin D from rays of sunshine. Since the basics were now covered, I would allow myself to indulge in 5 various supplements that had spectacular claims of life extension, and disease fighting that captured my imagination. So in no particular order, here they are.
- Collagen Peptide powder (anti aging benefits)
- Apricot seeds (aka Laetrile, or B17) conspiracy based anti cancer seed
- Black seed oil (too many health benefits to list)
- Irish Sea Moss (a stud among superfoods)
- Amino acids (L’arginine and L’citrulline – man stuff)
ON THE BUBBLE: These supplements just missed the cut
- NAD (extends length of telomeres – life of cells)
- Resveratrol (fights free radicals, anti-aging benefits)
- Beet Root (Ridiculous list of health benefits. May have to re-think this one)
- Lion’s mane mushroom (brain health)
- Chlorella (many benefits including potentially heavy metals detox)
- Methylene Blue (RFK Jr. swears by it – mitochondrial efficiency)
Honestly, I would happily put those back in my daily regimen, but in order to maintain my sanity, I had to draw the line somewhere. However, the list is under constant scrutiny. It will always be subject to change as new information is uncovered.
To your health!
